Effective Corporate Accountability policies require a regulatory agency or ombudsman that has the expertise and capacity to investigate the corporate responsibility policies and practices of companies. Such an agency would be able to advise, start investigations following complaints and impose sanctions if necessary.
This regulatory agency or ombudsman should be able to monitor the Corporate Accountability conditions for state aid and could also open investigations following reports or news about corporate abuse. It should also have the power to develop plans to improve the behaviour of companies and decide on compensation for victims.
The agency or ombudsman could also serve as a central point for expertise and knowledge about Corporate Accountability. This should contribute to the coherent and consistent implementation of Corporate Accountability standards in all Dutch government policy, as well as the further development of these standards.
